Meje 30 provocatrice en Ouganda

She was an enigma in her dressing, but now all that has changed and she prefers to be called “Mamu Nationale (mother of the nation) because I have changed a lot of people and I have healed a lot of people through my music.” The now born-again Tshala Muana shocked many when she appeared on stage wearing a hijab like a Muslim, causing debate as to whether she is the real singer who used to dance almost half naked on her visits to Uganda. “That was then and this is today; after serving as a member of parliament and taking leave from music for three years I had to change my lifestyle, though it was not simple,” she explained. She says that with experience of 30 years on stage and 25 albums on her lips, she had to give up those sensuous costumes and sexy dance moves to more descent long dresses. In an interview, conducted through an interpreter as she is most fluent in Swahili and French, Tshala Muana confessed that she does feel uncomfortable in the long dresses, although noting that she is now a grandmother with six grand children. “But if provoked I could still throw off the ‘hijab’ and show her true colours,” she joked. Then she introduced her “successor”, 30-year-old Meje, who is her duplicate on stage. “She dresses like I used to dress; she is good. She sings well and I hope she takes over from where I left. I have many like her but I had to come with only 20 members, otherwise the number is very big,” she said. Meje’s dance moves at Sabrina’s Pub captivated fans and at one point it became evident that she had no underwear on.
Despite the accusation from the fans that her dancing was perhaps too suggestive and vulgar, Tshala Muana was quick to rise to Meje’s defence, saying that the dance and dress code were all cultural. “We are just modernising it a bit and we cannot do away with the Mutuashi; it is the identity of the people of Kasai tribe and that’s why chiefs of Kasai appointed me their ambassador,” she said. Tshala Muana, who has been in the country for two weeks, was invited by the Congolese Embassy as their new ambassador to Uganda presented his credentials to President Museveni. She has since entertained people at Kahinda Otafiire’s son’s wedding, at Sabrina’s Pub, and she entertained the Congolese community at Didi’s World on Saturday during the Vision Congo Nite. Tshala Muana last visited Uganda 14 years ago (1996), and she says it has taken her that long to come back because Africa lacks good promoters after Tamukati left for America. She also launched a stinging attack on some Ugandan musicians whose only claim to fame is imitating Congolese and Western music. “1 have watched a number of videos and wondered why these guys cannot be original but just imitate others. Uganda has a very good culture background that needs to be promoted as we have tried to promote ours; that is why people call our music Congolese music and there is no song that can be called Ugandan,” she said. Delving a little into politics, Tshala Muana claimed that although DRC is good at music, Uganda beats the Congolese when it comes to loving their country. “In Congo there is no love for each other, no one has the country at heart and that was my assignment when the late [president] Laurent Kabila appointed me to parliament together with Tabu Ley and Somida. We were elected to parliament to represent our cultures and musicians but the primary assignment was teaching love.” At Sabrina’s Pub When she came on stage it was evident that her fan base was still intact though the machines were not up to standard. She managed to do eight songs, including Lekela, Mamweno, Dinanga, her most popular Mutuashi, Ntambue, Malu and Biduaya. “Today I sang without feelings, I would have danced more than this but morale was reduced by the poor sound; next time I will come with my technicians because it seems there is no good technician in Uganda,” said an angry – and now fatter – Tshala Muana. Her anger was justified as she had to stop at least three times after the microphones failed. Notable in the audience were; General Salim Saleh, Gordon Wavamunno and his wife Morrine, and Paul Kasagga, among others. So, was it Kabila or Tabu Ley? Tabu Ley! Jesus Christ, I can never fall in love with such people and for Mzee Laurent Kabila, he just appointed me and nothing more than that. What makes you look young at 50? I love God so much because He is my producer, composer and He guides me in everything. I also don't drink a lot of alcohol because alcohol is not good for women, it makes us look older (she says this while holding her Bond 7 bottle in one hand). I also no longer eat meat and I drink a lot of water; that is why at this age I can dance and sing without getting tired. \n abaker@observer.ug This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
