Les publications sur l´histoire de l´aviation militaire de la RD Congo sont de plus en plus disponibles même si les recherches dans ce domaine sont très rares au Congo. Par hasard, nous sommes tombés sur le travail du Lieutenant-Colonel  Ediba Biangala des FAZA. Sa mémoire “Zaïre Air Force : Future missions” publiée á Air War College. Air University, United States Air Force. Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama 1988 (USA) est une référence militaire très rare au Congo où la formation académique de ce niveau n´existe plus.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Lieutnant-Colonel Ediba Biangala was a squadron commander from 1983 until coming to the Air Force College in 1987, and he has encountered many problems in performing close air support training and in real conflicts. Upon graduation from the Italian Air Academy in Naples, he flew with the counterinsurgency (COIN) aircraft Aermacchi MB-326 before his conversion to the Marcel-Dassault Mirage-5M in 1977. He graduated from Air Command and Staff College class of 1982, before being assigned as squadron commander of the squadron flying Mirages. Colonel Ediba is a graduate of Air War College, class of 1988.

Jean Louis M´pele M´pele Flew Congo´s Hot-Rod French Fighter. The ex-fighter pilot died in November 2017

Famous Congolese pilot Col. Jean Louis M´pele M´pele, who flew for the Zairian air force passed away on Nov. 12.2017. ]u]M´pele was one of the first African pilots to fly the French-made Dassault Mirage 5.[/u]

Zaire, now called Democratic Republic of Congo, was only the second country in Africa - after South Africa with the Mirage III - to purchase the Dassault delta-wing fighter jet. But the Mach-two plane wasn´t well-suited to the Central African theater and its weather, and never really met Zaire´s needs.

 LES 7 HERCULES C-130 H DES FAZA

Quand depuis des années, la RDC est incapable d´acquerir des avions de transport Airbus- 400 M ou des Hercules C-130 J,la jeune génération des congolais devrait apprendre qu´en 1970 10 ans après l´indépendance  notre pays avait commandé  7 Hercules C-130 H,( l´avant dernière version du fameux Hercules C-130).
Vous serez surpris d´apprendre que 2 Hercules C-130 H ex FAZA sont encore en service dans l´armée de l´air en France en ce moment.

Despite significant financial difficulties, in 1970 Mobutu ordered seven Lockheed C-130 H Hercules transports from the USA and three DHC-5D Buffalo Bombardier transports from Canada

Comme membre de la première promotion de la Garde Civile, nous avons eu la chance de voyager de Gbadolite  á Kin lors de la fin du stage commando á Kota Koli á bord de l´Hercules C-130 H "9T-TCG" GOLF qui était l´avion du PR Mobutu... pendant une mission á Kasumbalesa, la même machine va nous transporter de Kin-Lubumashi-Kin avec le colonel Mbo aux commandes.

Worse yet, by 1995, the FAZA ceased keeping even their remaining  C-130s in operational condition, although two, coded 9T-TCC and 9T-TCF were send to France for overhaul in 1996, they never returned and were subsequently taken up by French Air Force.

And the best Congolese Mirage pilot, Colonel Leon Mbo was killed in a castastrophe loss of Hercules C-130 H 9T-TCG that explosed after taking of from N´Djili under suspicious circumstances, on 20 April 1990

"AVIKAT": L´ORGINE DE LA FORCE AERIENNE DU CONGO ?

Un seul avion Fouga Magister est á l´orgine de la fondation de la force aérienne de la RDC C´était la première fois que les avions de combat étaient utilisés dans la guerre au Congo. Nous devons á l´AVIKAT la création de notre force aérienne dont l´impact sur la conduite de la guerre avait influencée et continue d´influencer la place de la puissance aérienne dans les guerres au Congo

L´article raconte l´histoire incroyable d´un pilote mercenaire Belge de l´Aviation Katangaise AVIKAT aux commandes d´un Fouga Magister avait terrorisé la mission militaire de l´ONU (ONUC) au Katanga. L´exploit de ce pilote va contraindre l´ONUC á engager une force aérienne, la première et dans l´histoire des missions militaires de l´ONU.

"At this early stage of the conflict, the Aviation Katangaise (AVIKAT), also known as Force Aérienne Katangaise (FAK)  held air superiority, though it consisted of only three Fouga Magister jet trainers.
In any case, the KAF fleet was quickly reduced in effectiveness: one Fouga Magister was lost when pilot tried to fly under (rather than over) a power line; and UN forces captured antother when they seized the airfield at Elisabethville, the Katanga capital, on 28 August 1961.
This left the FAK only one plane, but this single aircraft attained world renown during the hostilities of September by paralyzing UN supply effort, which were mostly conducted by air transport aircraft.
The single jet, flown by a Belgian mercenary from the Kolwezi airfield, also strafed UN position, including the UN Headquarter in Katanga, and helped isolate a company of Irish troops who were forced to surrender at Katangam airport.
Furthermore, the Fouga jet destroyed several UN-chartered aircraft at Katangan airports,including Elisabethville, the Katanga capital.

A US Department official, Wayne Fredericks, commented: " I have always believed in air power, but I never thought I´d see the day when one plane would stop the United States and the whole United Nations"

Ceux qui observent la faiblesse de notre armée ne peuvent pas croire que la RDC était une puissance militaire réelle avec des avions militaires et une puissance de feu respectable.

LES MIRAGE 5M DES FAZA

1983, Major M´PELE M´PELE, Capitaine MAX BUYUNGI et Capitaine ENGONGO LIPEMBA

La photo de ces trois pilotes des Mirages 5M ont été en mission à N´Djamena ( Tchad) en 1983. Selon le site www.warisboring.com , le Zaire avait importé 17 Mirage 5M 14 single-seat Mirage 5M and three two-seater Mirage 5DM et la formation des pilotes va se passer á Dijon en France.

1988 LA FRANCE REPREND LES MIRAGES

By 1988 there were only seven single seat Mirage 5M and one two-seat Mirage 5DM left in the Zairean inventory. Dassault bought them back and sold them onward to *Egypt.
